Excited about starting a memoir writing class

I started attending an 8-week memoir writing class taught by Kimberlee Auerbach, who wrote The Devil, the Lovers, & Me: My Life in Tarot, and it’s amazing! I’m excited to be learning from someone so good – she can really identify the strengths in a piece of writing and give great feedback about making it better.

Inspiring Mediabistro class

Had a great time at a Mediabistro class this week: Personal Essay Clinic: Writing About Family, with Paula Derrow, the articles director of Self magazine. Derrow’s a really inspiring editor – super nurturing and with an amazing ability to pull out the heart of the story when listening to a first draft.

Riding the New York City subway in the middle of the day along with the other non-office workers, I often see nervous young people in new suits, knuckles white from clutching their shiny, empty briefcases – college students or recent grads on their way to job interviews. Eyes wide open, mumbling to themselves, they look mentally unstable and inspire pity, which in my experience is exactly the correct approach to getting your first job.
